BBB Torch Awards showcase trust in the marketplace and honor local businesses and public charities for their outstanding commitment to fair, honest and ethical business practices.
On Friday, March 31, HEMIC received the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award in the large business category at a ceremony held at the Sheraton Waikiki. The Torch Awards focus on demonstrated ethical business practices with key stakeholders including customers, employees and the community at large, rather than focusing on a company’s growth, profitability or popularity. The Torch Award Winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges consisting of Hawaii business leaders.
This year, HEMIC is celebrating twenty years of proudly caring for Hawai‘i businesses and their workers, as the state’s largest carrier of workers’ compensation insurance. CEO Marty Welch said, “We are very proud to have been chosen from a field of 83 nominees for the BBB Torch Awards, and from three finalists in the ‘large company’ category. At this exciting time, as we celebrate our 20th anniversary, it is especially meaningful to be recognized as a company with integrity. We stand by Hawai’i’s workers in their time of need and by the local businesses we have served for the past 20 years.”
“This year Hawaii’s BBB saw a record-breaking number of nominations. Over 80 companies were nominated for this prestigious award,” stated Gregory Dunn, president and CEO, of Hawaii’s Better Business Bureau. “The 2017 winners have shown that ethics and integrity are core values of their organization and join an elite group of organizations that realize dealing fairly and honestly with employees, customers and partners are central to profitability and growth. They serve as role models in the community and it is an honor to present them with this award.”
HEMIC Vice President Tammy Teixeira said, “We recently unveiled new artwork on each floor of our offices that speaks to our core values of integrity and professionalism. We will continue to operate with Hawai’i’s highest values in mind, to model the spirit of excellence in both our technical skills and customer service — with fairness and balance in everything that we do.”
This year’s BBB Torch Award keynote speaker was Stephen M. R. Covey, co-founder of CoveyLink and the FranklinCovey Global Speed of Trust Practice. Covey is also a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of “The SPEED of Trust.” A sought-after and compelling keynote speaker and advisor on trust, leadership, ethics and high performance, he speaks to audiences around the world.
