Our Story.

A Kama‘āina Company.

In 1996, HEMIC was created to solve serious challenges facing Hawai‘i’s workers compensation system — to stabilize the market and to ensure that all Hawai‘i businesses could secure coverage. Today, HEMIC has grown into Hawai‘i’s largest provider of workers compensation insurance, a carrier of choice serving 6,700 businesses, 75,000 workers, and over 25% of the Hawai‘i market.

Established as a private, mutual company owned by our policyholders, we began without any funding by the State or its taxpayers, issuing our first policy in 1997. Within one year (1998), our fledgling company exceeded $10 million in premium revenue. By 2006, we built over $100 million in policyholders’ surplus, establishing financial stability so that we could be here to serve Hawai‘i businesses long into the future.

In 2007, we earned an “A” rating for financial stability from AM Best, which we maintain today. That year, we also declared our first policyholder dividend, and we have declared a dividend each year since.

Today, HEMIC reports annual revenue of over $72 million, serving policyholders across the Hawaiian Islands with a staff of over 115 local employees.

HEMIC is now a diversified family of companies, with two wholly-owned subsidiaries to help businesses with their additional insurance needs: Employers’ Protective Insurance Company (EPIC) provides temporary disability insurance, and HEMIC Insurance Managers, Inc. (HIMI) brokers all other lines of commercial business insurance as well as providing TPA services to self-insured entities and captive insurers.

In 2017, HEMIC was honored by the Better Business Bureau with their highest honor: The BBB Torch Award for Ethics. This prestigious award is given to businesses with an outstanding commitment to fair, honest and ethical practices demonstrated by consistent action and integration into their daily practices with all their stakeholders: customers, employees, and community. HEMIC has also been named one of Hawai‘i’s “Best Places to Work” by both Hawaii Business and Pacific Business News over multiple years.
