Hawaii Business: Celebrating Professional Women

As Vice President of Claim & Medical Management Services at HEMIC, Hawai‘i’s leading workers’ compensation insurance carrier, Milia Leong draws on 25+ years of experience and a driving desire to make a di­fference to lead her division in innovative, e­ffective servicing to care for Hawai‘i’s businesses and workers.

Under Milia’s leadership, her departments have been structured to provide account management and servicing for all types and sizes of businesses they serve, employing best practices to ensure optimal outcomes for HEMIC’s claimants and policyholders.

Milia inspires her team with passion and a commitment to do what is right, never settling for anything less than excellence. She developed an internal education program to grow the next generation of claim adjusters, instilling strong technical expertise to manage and mitigate claims and superior customer service skills to communicate with customers at all levels with compassion and professionalism.

Milia also brings a wealth of Third-Party Claim Administration (TPA) experience to the HEMIC family of companies and leads the workers’ compensation fee-for-service TPA program o­ffered by HEMIC Insurance Managers Inc (HIMI). These services for self-insured and captive entities provide HEMIC’s claim management and mitigation philosophy, local servicing, and customer service guided by HEMIC’s core values of excellence, integrity, connection, and belief that the work they do matters.

In 2018, Milia joined forces with HEMIC colleague Tammy Teixeira to found Kids’ Chance of Hawai‘i, an organization dedicated to changing the lives of keiki who have had a parent seriously injured or killed on the job by providing educational scholarships. As founding president, she has brought together stakeholders across the workers’ compensation industry who are often across the table from each other to join forces for this great cause. In just three years of existence, they have been recognized by Kids’ Chance of America as a model chapter organization.

Dedicated to her industry, Milia is a member of Hawai‘i Insurers Council – Policy Committee Chair for Workers’ Compensation, a member of the Legislative Working Group, and has served as past-President of the Hawai‘i Claims Association. Widening her involvement nationally, Milia is also a member of the Claim Committee for AASCIF.
